Poptastic Conversation - Bands From Germany Singing Their Songs in Japanese

Poptastic Conversation – German bands singing their songs in Japanese. That was the motto for Fly Fast Record's cultural initiative: we asked bands of our acquaintance to come to the studio and record their songs in Japanese. We rounded off these recordings with some additional material. Poptastic Conversation wants to promote German pop culture in Japan and to initiate intercultural exchange.
But the dialogue between Japanese and German pop aficionados isn’t this project’s only objective. We also want to get young people in Germany interested in the Japanese language. This is why each copy also contains a bonus CD with a Japanese course, courtesy of PONS publishers.
The cover was designed exclusively by the renowned Japanese comic artist Radical Suzuki. The booklet is trilingual in German, English, and Japanese. The CD also contains additional video material.
The Berlin-based label Fly Fast Records has close ties with the Asian market, and we feel deeply committed to intercultural exchange. Our documentary Beijing Bubbles - Punk and Rock in China’s Capital was shown successfully at prestigious international festivals.

K-Nel - Voice of Kenya

In Africa he is a star. All tracks from his culture mix album ‘Voice of Kenya’ are still on heavy rotation in East Africa. The track ’Mimi Ni Hustler’ was leading the charts for three weeks (Hot96 FM). Now, the rapper and MC starts to hit the rest of the world. K-Nel is allegiant to his roots but open for other cultures, too: „I love my roots, but I’m open-minded, you know?!“ His multicultural approach is evident on the album. K-Nel mixed heavy rap, emotional RnB, hard reggaeton with mellow latin, electric rock guitar and spherical Indian sitar guitar. He raps in English and Anglohili, a mix of English and Kiswahili. On the album he sings about love, life in Kenya, unity and
international understanding. For musical support K-Nel gains producer Enno Kremser (Patrice, Metaphysics, Sisters Keepers, Gentleman), Mamadee (Gentleman, Mellow Mark, Seeed) for background vocals and features artists like Bilingua, Murti, Patricia, Raquel und Al.
The album starts with a limited edition including a lot of bonus material: in addition to the regular 15 tracks is also the original version of the single ’Mi Negro Lindo’, its super-16 mm video, supported by the film equipment giant
Arri as well as the shooting of this video clip. For K-Nel this album means much more than personal success. Living in Germany but having an African background he takes the chance to draw attention to the problems in Africa and wants to give hope, optimism and courage to the people back home. „Follow your dreams“ V.O.K.

MARY JANE - WHAT I CAME HERE FOR

Debut ‘What I Came Here For’ 7 track EP (produced by Killing Joke guitarist Geordie Walker) released April 17th, Islington Hope & Anchor gig April 6th***
"This trio have balls. Physically, only the one sack full, as two of 'em are girlies, but musically they have balls spilling all over the place. Big, dirty ones that swing to a pulsating beat. Like one of those office stress relievers with clacking balls, only these have sharp metal spikes" Rock Sound Magazine.
Mary-Jane are a dynamic, melodic, edgy and aggressive 3 piece punk rock outfit from Huddersfield featuring Teri Flynn on vocals/bass, Rachel Goulding on guitars and Ben Carter drums. Their debut release, ‘What I Came Here For’, produced by Killing Joke’s Geordie Walker at the famed Faust Studios in Prague, Czech Republic, is set for physical release on April 10th 2006 on Chocolate Fireguard Records.
All tracks are already available as downloads from Itunes. 'What I Came Here For' contains four studio tracks –‘Lipstick’, ‘Love’, ‘Truth’, and ‘What I Came Here For’ + an alternative studio version of 'Love' + two special live tracks –‘Not The First Time’ and ‘Overgrown’ - from their BBC Raw Talent session recorded at a Chocolate Fireguard label night at the Revolution Club in Huddersfield which went on to be voted best BBC Raw Talent Live gig of 2005!
Our basic deal was to make a record with attitude, so this is by design a very angry EP,” says Teri. “I wrote the words to these songs based on various relationships, incorporating feelings about myself and other people. ‘Lipstick’ is about the foolishness of having to dress up and put on a mask for people, and ‘Truth’ is about exploring the idea of wanting someone to want you for who you are. And of course, it’s always fun to dig into the darker side of ‘Love.’”

Flynn was heavily inspired by the no hold barred approach of great female artists of the 90s like L7, Courtney Love, Babes in Toyland and Brody Dalle of The Distillers as a teenager. “In the years when I was struggling to find and assert my own identity, I looked to these artists to give me power and courage, and that has rubbed off on the music I make today,” Flynn says. “They were very strong minded and listening to their music made me feel like I, as a young girl growing up in England, was worth something. Nowadays in the music business, you don’t have as many women empowering women anymore, and that’s where the music of Mary-Jane comes in. I want people who hear us, especially women, to feel empowered, to be strong, to discover a place where they can exorcise their demons. That’s what we’re about.”

“We were playing gigs all over the place when Chocolate Fireguard signed us and sent us over to Faust Studios in Prague, hooking us up with Geordie, who said we reminded him of Veruca Salt. He’s a great guitarist, and knew how to bring out an immense guitar sound on these tracks.”
Indeed Faust Studios is also where Killing Joke have been recording their 2006 CD Hosannas From The Basements Of Hell for Cooking Vinyl, hot on the heels of a Kerrang Lifetime Achievement award

Mary Jane, who are currently working on their debut full length album ‘Dissolve To Nothing’, showcase ‘What I Came Here For’ live at Islington’s Hope & Anchor on April 6th For press contact: Roland Hyams @ Work Hard PR - roland@workhardpr.com

Stop the press: Check out singer Teri’s recent collaborations: Aquasky & Dreamland and also a stonker with Fear Factory and breaks duo The Autobots called ‘This World’ (out very soon on Broke Records). Autøbøts and Teri certainly impressed the crowds at Timeless Festival 2005 and this tune won’t disappoint you either!

Alternative Nation
"We’re talking noisy. Not melodic boredom noise with how-can-I-exist-with/without-pain, fuck no, Mary Jane are far smarter than that. We’re talking Babes In Toyland noise, Skunk Anansie thankfully without the sheen, strong tunes with some genuine rough edges to bruise your ears on. And god knows, Skiddle likes music with some genuine rough edges. Plenty of riffs kicking through the speakers, vocals that aren’t afraid to strain to the point of being itchy, red, raw, and sore, and on top of that, the production’s been done by a bloke called Geordie from Killing Joke. Never heard of him, bought his records, or seen his band at least, 8 or 9 times. Mary Jane are Rachel Goulding (Guitars), Teri Flynn (Vocals, bass guitar), and Ben Carter (Drums, backing vocals) and their EP, ‘What I came here for’ is a tasty opener for better things to come. It’s good, and as much as I like the studio tracks…I love the two live tracks more. Let loose and away from the cosy indoors, this band, given the push, could prove to be a roaring monster. Marks out of 5? Hooyeah!" Skiddle

The Crack Whore Society - Lowrider

Drinks and drugs, noise, sickness… welcome to The Crack Whore Society! Descending from the Punk and Hardcore scene of the early 90s the mission of this Berlin based band can now clearly be defined as ADDICTIVE ROCK MUSIC! The guys around Frontsau Patrick Schauer have just finished the recording sessions of their self-titled debut album which will be released on Angora Steel in late Summer 2007.
The outcome are 14 songs in only 35 minutes – fast, hard, on point! The raw production was done by T.Raumschmiere (Shitkatapult/Mute) who left his monstertruck in the parking lot to get into the driver’s seat behind the Crack Whore boards. The final touch was contributed by Christian Vogel (another former techno legend and part of  Super Collider alongside Jamie Lidell) who is responsible for the mastering of the sound.
The band itself consists of Mario Bender (guitare), Kai Mohr (guitare) and Marco Haas (drums). For live performances they get support from the  experienced master of low frequencys Andreas Paruschke (member of the T.Raumschmiere Band). Sticking together they spit out such an extreme tight wall of sound making ferroconcrete look like candyfloss. SICK AS FUCK, TWICE AS HARD! This should make fans The Bronx, Smokeblow or Beatsteaks feel comfortable…
“Lowrider” is the advance single to the album and features an exclusive Motor remix on the b-side. The 7” is printed on white vinyl and is stricktly limited to 666 handnumbered copies – collectors item!!!

Heifer - The Judas Belt

Hailing from Sydney, Australia, HEIFER have been described as an alternative/metal band, but there’s so much more to them than that. They made a brief visit here in 2006 and, after only two weeks and four shows, managed to attract a small but enthusiastic following with some intense, legendary live shows. It was obvious to all who saw them why they had built a cult following in their home country.
The band is now headed back to Europe this summer in support of the album release, with shows in June and July (dates to be announced).
Whilst they cite influences such as Helmet, AC/DC and System of a Down among many others, what they actually produce on “The Judas Belt” is a style all their own - heavy guitars with virtuosic drums and rasping vocals, interspersed with moments of melodic instrumental and vocal lines, and some odd time signatures. As acknowledged by Australian heavy music website “Faster Louder”:
To their credit, their sound is nothing like the predictable retro-rock you'll hear 'representing' Australia overseas or on the country's 'pop' radios - HEIFER are an original band with a punch to pack and something real to say, as shown by ‘The Judas Belt’, their first full-length album.”   – www.fasterlouder.com.au
This album feels like a punch in the face both musically and lyrically – an alt/metal aural assault, with lyrics inspired by current world events, as well as some dark auto-biographical accounts. Heifer writes songs about things that are important – both on a personal level to themselves, and on a global scale.  They rally against injustice, apathy, political manipulation, and the lurking evil forces of cynicism and conservatism with sound, fury, originality, and righteous indignation. A breath of fresh air in a world largely devoid, it seems, of meaningful and truly honest, passionate music. It includes a bonus DVD with video clips, interviews, and more.

THE SCARAMANGA SIX

WHO THE DEVIL ARE THEY?
EVIL Pop group, The Scaramanga Six, are a tight-knit organisation. Every one of these desperate individuals is hell-bent on assaulting the ears of the unsuspecting with intensive rock and roll music. The group currently consists of:
Julia Arnez – Vocals, Guitars
Chris Catalyst – Organ, Piano, 2nd Drums, Trombone
Gareth Champion – Drums
Paul Morricone – Vocals, Guitars, Saxophone
Steven Morricone – Vocals, Bass, Piano, Saxophone

WHAT THE BLAZES DO THEY THINK THEY’RE PLAYING AT?
We’re not going to draw any lazy comparisons here – The Scaramanga Six do not rock by association. The only thing worn on the sleeves of this band are gaudy cufflinks. Whatever it is The Six turn their hand to, it's got to be flamboyant and colourful, self-assured and passionate, brutal and arrogant. Their love of dynamics and dramatic tension stirs them to create brilliant moments of songwriting in the classic British tradition, yet underpinned by a relentless barrage of sonic terror – all mashed up together and captured within perfectly dark and discordant pop songs. The lyrical content is intelligent, contentious, intriguing and seething. The hooks in their songs will stick into you so far, that you will have no choice but to be reeled in, gutted and battered like a haddock. One taste of this chaotic and intimidating group, whether it be live or on record, and you’ll see why ‘the band who torture from Yorkshire’ are so blindly committed to their cause.
WHERE DID THESE SCOUNDRELS COME FROM?
The Scaramanga Six is the brainchild of headstrong siblings Paul and Steven Morricone. Not in any way like your conventional mindless rock-star filth, The Morricone brothers appear more like a pair of polite and softly-spoken, yet viciously intense and sadistic nightclub bouncers. Raised in the Westcountry seaside resort of Weston-Super-Mare on an education of Stranglers records (by older brothers) and Tony Bennett records (by their Mum), the young Morricone twins discovered there was much fun to be had in crooning and shouting in equal measures.
The latter part of the Nineties saw them hooking up with nonchalant, yet studious organist Dr John Gulliver, and rabid guitar-smashing dwarf Bill Bailey. Then THE SCARAMANGA SIX had become a brutal and startling reality amongst an endless torrent of boring mediocrity. The scene was set – a new backdrop of the drizzly Yorkshire town of Huddersfield, a penchant for deafening noise and easy listening composers, this set of misfits started to work out how to ROCK. They played frantic gigs around the north of England to harden themselves to a strict regime of total rock action, where they would go onstage in dark suits and stare the audience out in silence for the length of a cigarette before starting the set.
After numerous substitutions, several now-legendary early recorded releases and a trail of carnage and broken equipment left at various venues up and down the country, The Scaramanga Six matured into a truly evil band augmented by the womanly persuasions of Miss Julia Arnez on second drums, guitar and vocals. The Six signalled malicious intent with 1999's 'THE LIAR, THE BITCH AND HER WARDROBE' LP on Trinity Records. This hour-long, low-budget thriller contained earlier singles ‘VAMP’ and ‘HORRIBLE FACE’.
2000 sees maniacal fiend, James Agnew takes up the drums and The Six leave the melodramatics behind in favour of a more balls-to-the-wall rock sound. Jenny Jet Harris is drafted in to complete the female guitar duelling and the next two years see the release of two EP’s: 'ARE YOU ONE OF THE FAMILY?', 'THE CONTINUING SAGA OF THE SCARAMANGA SIX' and 7-inch single ‘YOU DO, YOU DIE!’ All releases are much lauded by numerous printed and digital press, spats of radio glory beckon and an even more prolific future is heralded. The Six become increasingly untouchable in their home manor of Leeds, particularly with the founding of the miraculous new label, Wrath Records.
2003 was a good year for The Six as they declared an all-out war against the bore with the truly confusing album, ‘STRIKE! UP THE BAND’ which garnered a shitload of crawly-bumlick press coverage from the likes of Kerrang!, Rock Sound, Drowned In Sound etc. The band toured sporadically with new drumster Stuffy Gilchrist who eventually left to join the legendary Graham Coxon’s live band. However, not before he linked the Six up with one of their musical idols, Mr Tim Smith of the Cardiacs. The Six found great kinship with Mr Smith’s skewed and schizoid take on music and the results form the rest of their current output: ‘THE POISON PEN’ 7” single, the ‘WE RODE THE STORM’ single and their third behemoth of an album ‘CABIN FEVER’, which all saw release throughout 2004/5.
Armed with this arsenal of ear-splitting and frankly bizarre pop music, new drum-twatter Anthony Sargeant is poached from a Queen tribute-band and the Six stubbornly carry on as a 4-piece with Steven Morricone playing organ with his arse at live shows. The line-up is completed in the autumn of 2004 with the addition of mohawked bezerker Chris Catalyst to pick up and make a racket with whatever is closest to hand.
Sargeant leaves to go back to a life on the cabaret circuit at the start of 2006, but not before laying down the drum tracks for what will become The Six’s 4th long-player ‘THE DANCE OF DEATH’. Concentrating more on the macabre and unnerving, a blistering single is taken from the forthcoming album – ‘BAGGAGE’ and the band recruit fresh new drummer, ‘Maraca’ Gareth Champion to carry forward a relentless campaign of live shows up and down the UK in 2006 including supports with the likes of Cardiacs & The Fall and juicy slots at several of the summer’s festivals. Now, new album in hand & tooled-up to the teeth, The Scaramanga Six are ready to ATTACK.

PRACTICAL HEADZ - Who Iz It?

DHot on the heels of  Huddersfield’s Jehst and Asaviour (both originally from Huddersfield) and the Town’s Michal Parknsun comes the debut CD release ‘Who Iz It?’ from Practical Headz UK hip hop crew straight outta Dalton, Huddersfield.
Practical Headz comprises of the Bishop, Fingaz, Spida Lee, and the Practical Hand. This impressive debut album features 'Reality' with thugged up mid 90s flava co production from the Beat Butcha. Other bangers include 'Get The F**k Out' with some humorous lyrics from Spida Lee about suspicious odours and not being able to get into clubs. On 'Throw Ya Handz Up' the Headz collaborate with Tony Bear on some intense up tempo chopped up production while 'Stop The Diction' witnesses the Bishop rock over a dark synthed up beat. Then there's the downright sinister epic 'Shit Spitters' Oh my! The release is solid, there's bair more goodness coming from them so they're definitely peeps to check for !
The idea for a release first came about after Practical Headz collaborated with label mates French hip hoppers La Cédille at  Chocolate Fireguard’s annual Timeless Festival. Top tune "Smooth Vibe" was featured on Chocolate Fireguard compilation „Interesting Flavours“ (alongside Freddy Fresh, Bentley Rhythm Ace, awayTEAM etc) and“Throw Ya Drinks Up“ was included on „Jazzdelicious (Dope Mix Edition“ (S2SJ Japan/Singapore). The band have supported the likes of Skinnyman, Excalibur (1xtra), La Cédille, Kava Kava, Jehst, Asavious and IQ and via an excellent PR campaign by Zzonked have received airplay on the Selector show, Juice FM, Dug Out (Brighton), BBC Radio 1xtra and reviews in publications such as DJ Mag, DMC Update, Mojo, Independent On Sunday etc (see review quotes section).
Generally things are looking up for Huddersfield hip hop. Jehst and Asaviour who we booked to play our annual Timeless Festival up here (Practical Headz supported) are putting Huddersfield on the map as well as up and coming local crews Groundwurq and Michal Parknsun. Also key Practical Headz rapper Spida Lee’ is makes waves of his own with a solo single „Verbal Assassin“ out now.
Requests just in: Practical Headz IDs required for Notting Hill Carnival from Crispin Phillip (specialist music programming 1xtra) and also Charis Blyth (Somethin' Else producer for Selector show) requested Practical Headz for a special Leeds show.

LOS SKALAMEROS - DID YOU FORGET

UP IN HELL - TRANCE
